Acoustic Duo Fool's Gold present 'The Blaydon Races of 1862' on Sat 11 April 2026

Taking inspiration from William Irving's painting 'The Blaydon Races' the show sees lots of characters from the time.

Nanny the Mazer, Cushy Butterfield, The Swallwell Cat, Black Diamond, Geordie Ridley himself and many more - this show tells their stories and features a great mix of original and traditional music all about these wonderful characters.

This show is great for audiences all over the world - not just the North-East!

Projected visuals help bring the whole show to life, with state-of-the-art animations and images.

First Aid Awareness | dealing with a sick or injured child or baby

The aim of this morning session is to provide you with knowledge and skills to help in a first aid situation with a baby or child

This course aims to help you develop your knowledge and skills that could be essential in the event of an emergency.
It is suitable for complete beginners or can also aid confidence of people who already have some first aid knowledge and experience and want to refresh this.

Please note: This is not an accredited course this is a session designed to provide information and learning that promotes awareness and confidence when dealing with a first aid emergency involving a child or infant.

A new local carers support group launches on Wednesday 4th March from 3pm - 5pm offering a relaxed and welcoming environment where you can share experiences, meet other carers, take time for yourself and access support and information.

The group will meet every other month, tea and coffee are provided.

On Saturday 31 May, we have High Tea with live entertainment!

As part of the Welcome Spaces scheme, funded by Point North, we have High Tea from 4pm - 6pm including live entertainment from a fantastic singer.

Your choice of quiche or sausage roll followed by dessert and cakes. Hot drinks included but the bar will be open too.

Tickets must be booked in advance and are free, but donations would be gratefully received.

We do as that if, after booking, you are no longer able to attend, please let us know. This means tickets can be offered to those who have missed out and also helps to avoid food waste too.

We try hard to keep the Community Centre looking decent and the latest room to have had a bit of a makeover is Room 2 (aka the back room). We think it's turned out pretty well!

The room seats 16 boardroom style, 18 classroom style and up to 30 theatre style and is ideal for groups, meetings, training and more. Just get in touch if you're interested in booking or have any ideas for a group or activity.

We've had some fantastic new windows which have made the hall so much brighter, new LED lighting which is more adaptable and efficient, the floor has been stripped back, sanded and repolished and the walls have had a fresh coat of paint, some panelling and wallpaper.

It's been finished off with new pictures, curtains and blinds and (almost completed!) some new disco lighting too.

As it’s Volunteers Week 2024, we though it was a good time to tell you about some of the things our small, but dedicated, team of volunteers do to keep the community centre running.

There are all the jobs you’d expect – opening up, taking bookings, cleaning, setting up furniture and equipment, doing the accounts, doing the admin, making tea (a lot of it!), organising activities and events and offering a warm welcome to everyone who visits.

There are a lot of other things that you might not think about though. We’ve had a look back and some of the things our volunteers have done this year include

Painting and decorating rooms in the community centre to keep it looking good
Researching, consulting and applying for grants towards new activities and equipment
Training in food hygiene and licensing
Deep cleaning to get the hall ready to use after building work
Unblocking the toilets and drains (…please, please don’t put handtowels and nappies down the toilets!)
Building plenty of flatpack furniture
Washing, drying and ironing many many tea towels and tablecloths
Organising events from the date to the entertainment to the food and more
Steam cleaned and shampooed all 122 chairs in the community centre
Designing and distributing posters and newsletters and keeping our social media and website up to date so everyone knows what’s on
Repairing doors, toilets, taps and many more things
Looking for the best deals on electric and gas contracts…it’s not as simple as switching at home either!
And so much more

No-one gets paid. Everything is done voluntarily so the community centre is there for everyone to use. Please support it – it’s great to see a good turnout at events and activities.

If there’s something you’d like to see, let us know or why not get together with a few like-minded people and start a new group…there are a range of rooms available at very reasonable rates.

There are plenty of things on every week - why not get involved and try something new?

So...thank you to all our volunteers to work so hard to keep the place running. Thank you to all the volunteers who organise and run activities each week too and thank you to you all for supporting the community centre throughout the year.

The show explores the mystery - which the audience is invited to solve - with live music both original and contemporary, and projected images to bring it to life. Originating in North America, this inspirational true story of overcoming obstacles, pursuing passions, and the healing power of music has delighted international audiences. This is an exclusive North East tour following a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Playhouse in New York.

Keith Alessi was a well-known CEO running a company in Canada when he received a deadly cancer diagnosis. This event served as a catalyst for him to learn to play the banjo, a long-deferred passion. He ultimately found physical and emotional healing in a circle of musicians and this show tells that story. His journey to the stage was an improbable one.

This award-winning inspirational story will be exclusively touring the North East of England this Spring fresh from a successful run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Soho Playhouse in New York.

If you're coming along to 'A Way Home' this evening, we have some useful information on timings, food and parking...

We're looking forward to welcoming you to Hamsteels Community Centre for the performance of 'A Way Home' tomorrow evening. Doors will be open at 6pm and it would help us if you could have your tickets or etickets ready when you arrive. The bar will be open from 6pm too and the play will start at 7pm.

If you've ordered fish and chips, you'll have received a voucher (this may be included with your eticket). Please take your voucher to the bar where food is being served.

Finally, a request about parking; there are some spaces to the side of the Community Centre with on-street parking available in nearby roads. When parking, we'd appreciate it if you could consider our neighbours and avoid parking on pavements, close to/on junctions or blocking driveways. Please be aware that Western Avenue is a bus route and leave sufficient room for buses to pass too.

A Way Home is a new play written by Durham based Christina Castling, directed by Jonluke McKie with set design by Alison Ashton and new music composed by Roma Yagnik. It is a play all about home and what happens when it feels like that home is being taken away. It is about community, family and how they impact on your sense of identity.

Ian Millar & Dominic Spencer bring their rural tour, Jazz in the Village, to Hamsteels on 22 January 2022

Ian and Dominic have had enormous success over many years during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with their very successful show “Jazz at Lunchtime”. Thousands of people have come to see them perform, with many sell-out shows. A number of visitors to the Edinburgh Fringe from all over the world have returned year after year.

Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, they have regularly and extensively toured throughout the UK and have embarked on many rural tours under their “Jazz in the Village” series, playing in hundreds of halls, often bringing jazz for the first time to remote communities, performing in intimate settings to appreciative audiences. The beautiful Scottish scenery that they have seen on their travels has inspired the writing of many pieces of music by Ian.

This year Cornsay Parish Council has kindly offered some financial support toward the cost of events for the local community and we've decided to use this money to subsidise the cost of some of the events so that the most people are able to benefit.

Ian Millar & Dominic Spencer | Jazz in the village

Ian Millar & Dominic Spencer, saxophone and piano duo, will be at Hamsteels Community Centre on 22 January 2022

Ian Millar and Dominic Spencer have been performing together for a number of years playing melodic improvisations on jazz standards and original compositions. Their style of jazz concentrates on developing melodic ideas within the framework of the melody of a tune, whilst maintaining the concept and groove behind it. The result is a very accessible melodic style which allows them to explore, improvise and develop ideas without losing the essence of each piece of music, and to interact together in as creative a way as possible.

They have had enormous success over many years during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with their very successful show “Jazz at Lunchtime”. Thousands of people have come to see them perform, with many sell-out shows. A number of visitors to the Edinburgh Fringe from all over the world have returned year after year.

Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, the duo has regularly and extensively toured throughout the UK. They have embarked on many rural tours under their “Jazz in the Village” series, playing in hundreds of halls, often bringing jazz for the first time to remote communities, performing in intimate settings to appreciative audiences. The beautiful Scottish scenery that they have seen on their travels has inspired the writing of many pieces of music by Ian.

What to bring Whatever materials you would like to use: pencils, pastels, paper, paint

Ideas and themes will be presented by John whose focus will be to support and encourage individual class members to develop their own ways of drawing and painting.

These are two hour sessions with a short half time tea/coffee break with the classes taking place in a friendly supportive atmosphere. New Covid aware safety measures are in place to try to keep everyone as safe as possible.

If Covid restrictions return classes will revert to video/conference/WhatsApp but if that’s not your thing then your fee will be refunded.
